The verdict

What's good

  • Replaces the QX55 with an all-new cabin instead of another warm-over
  • All-wheel drive is standard rather than an upcharge
  • Undercuts the German coupe-crossovers it is aimed at
  • Built in Tennessee, which insulates it from import tariff swings

What's not

  • Brand-new nameplate with no reliability record to lean on
  • The sloping roof costs cargo room against the boxier QX60
  • Asks roughly what the roomier three-row QX60 does
  • Infiniti resale remains a genuine weak point
  • Dealer network is thin next to its German rivals

The engine

VC-Turbo

2.0L Variable-Compression Turbo I4

The world's first production variable-compression engine, continuously morphing between a high-compression efficiency mode and a low-compression power mode — here paired with a nine-speed automatic given a deliberately sharper shift schedule than the QX60's.

More than 20 years in the making at Nissan-Infiniti, the VC-Turbo made its production debut in the 2019 QX50 and carries over into the QX65 as the sole engine.
