The engine

BMW Straight-Six

Turbocharged 3.0L I6 with 48V Mild Hybrid

The engine BMW is least willing to give up, revised again rather than replaced: one turbocharger, six cylinders in a line, and a 48-volt motor tucked into the gearbox to fill the gap below boost so the car never feels like it is waiting for anything.

BMW has built straight sixes since 1933 and has kept this one alive through three rounds of downsizing pressure; the Neue Klasse generation folds the electrical architecture developed for the electric cars back into the combustion X5, which is assembled at Spartanburg alongside them.

An inline six is inherently balanced, which is why BMW has kept paying for a layout most rivals abandoned for V6s.
The 48-volt motor lives inside the transmission housing rather than driving the accessory belt, so it can add torque directly to the driveline.
Combined output is often quoted around 411 hp, but that number blends the motor's contribution and is not the figure BMW headlines for the engine.
This generation drops the optional third row entirely, a first for the X5 since the second-generation car introduced it.
