A pushrod, overhead-valve V8 built for low-end grunt and durability rather than high-rpm drama, delivering its torque early for hauling and towing with the unmistakable lazy burble of a classic American small-block.

The 5.7L (350 cu in) small-block traces directly to the original Chevrolet small-block that debuted in 1955; in trucks it lived on as the fuel-injected Vortec 5700 (RPO L31) from 1996, powering the GMC Sierra, Silverado, Suburban and Escalade.

• The L31 was the final version of the first-generation Chevy small-block, ending a production run that started in 1955 when it bowed out in 2002.
• Its iron 'Vortec' heads flowed far better than earlier small-block heads, a big reason this old architecture stayed competitive into the 2000s.
• GM has confirmed an all-new, unrelated 5.7L V8 returning for the 2027 next-generation Sierra 1500 — a fresh design rather than a revival of the Vortec.
