Single Rear-Mounted Electric Motor
One motor on the rear axle carries the entry car, which is why it is both the most efficient ES90 and the most relaxed to drive: power arrives smoothly rather than violently and the car leans on range instead of pace. Step up and a second motor appears on the front axle, and the Performance version doubles the output without changing the character much.
The ES90 is the saloon sibling to the EX90 and shares its SPA2 electric architecture, but it is the first Volvo to run that platform on an 800 volt system, built in Chengdu, China. That build location is the reason the planned United States launch was shelved: import tariffs made the car unprofitable there.
