The i4 eDrive40 sticks to BMW's rear-drive instincts, its single rear motor giving clean, linear, well-balanced thrust that feels more like a traditional sport sedan than a torque-dumping EV.

It runs BMW's fifth-generation eDrive system, with the motor, power electronics and battery all developed in-house by the BMW Group rather than bought in.

Its rear motor is an electrically excited synchronous design that uses no rare-earth permanent magnets, sidestepping reliance on scarce magnet materials.
Keeping a single motor on the rear axle preserves rear-wheel drive, staying true to BMW's traditional sport-sedan layout.
The fifth-generation eDrive package was engineered to share architecture between EVs and combustion cars on the same production lines.
