The verdict

What's good

Boot space is genuinely larger than the petrol crossover it shadows, not just competitive with it
Raised seating and a flat floor make it much easier to live with than an electric hatchback of the same length
It can run household equipment off the battery, which is rare this far down the price list
Front-wheel drive keeps the packaging tidy, so the cabin feels a size up from the exterior

What's not

Top speed is capped low enough that fast motorway networks will expose it
The cheaper battery drops the range far enough to change what the car is for
Charging speed is unremarkable, so a long journey means a proper break rather than a quick top-up
There is no all-wheel-drive version, which narrows its appeal in snowy regions

Single-Motor Electric (FWD)

A single front-mounted motor, and the first time Volkswagen has put its electric drive at the front rather than the rear in a mainstream ID car. The pay-off is packaging rather than playfulness: the rear floor stays flat and the boot swallows more than the combustion crossover it shadows.

Built on the shortened, front-driven version of Volkswagen's MEB architecture created for the group's affordable electric urban family, the same underpinnings as the ID. Polo, and assembled in Spain alongside its sister cars from the group's other brands.

It is the electric counterpart to the T-Cross rather than a replacement for it, and the two are close to the same length.
Two battery chemistries are offered: cheaper lithium iron phosphate in the small pack and nickel-based cells in the big one.
There is a small storage well under the boot floor in addition to the main load bay.
Volkswagen rates it to tow, which very few electric cars of this size are certified to do.
