What's good

The interior rework addresses the single loudest complaint owners had about the old car
Physical switches and backlit controls replace the touch surfaces that made the original awkward at night
Rear-wheel drive still gives it a tidiness through corners that front-driven rivals cannot copy
The long-range battery turns it from a city car with reach into a genuine cross-country proposition

What's not

The converted European list price puts it well above rivals of the same size
Charging speed on the smaller batteries remains modest, so the cheap versions are the slow ones to refill
Still no all-wheel-drive option, which limits it in colder markets
A new software generation on a redesigned car is exactly where early glitches tend to show up

The engine

Single-Motor Electric (RWD)

The motor still sits just ahead of the rear axle, so the car pushes rather than pulls and stays unusually neat when you lift mid-corner. The tuning is deliberately gentle off the line and strongest in the middle of its range, where an everyday hatchback actually spends its time.

This is the deepest revision the ID.3 has had since it launched Volkswagen's electric era, and it comes with a new name rather than a new platform: an updated MEB running new cell chemistry and a new software generation, still built at Zwickau on the line VW converted from combustion production.

The rear-drive layout is a deliberate echo of the rear-engined Beetle, and it survived the redesign untouched.
Three battery sizes are offered, and only the largest gets the faster charging hardware.
Volkswagen brought back illuminated physical controls here after years of criticism of the touch sliders in the original car.
The name change was the point of the update: VW reset the nameplate rather than calling it a facelift.
