A turbocharged horizontally-opposed four with strong, accessible mid-range torque and a distinctive flat-engine throb, trading the old flat-six's wail for punchier, more efficient grunt.

Internally the MA2 engine in the 982-generation 718 Boxster and Cayman; the '718' name and the flat-four layout deliberately evoke Porsche's 718 sports-racers that won the Targa Florio in 1959 and 1960.

• It marked Porsche's return to four-cylinder power in a sports car — the brand hadn't built a flat-four since the 914 ended production in 1976.
• The 2.5L S version added a variable-turbine-geometry turbocharger, technology Porsche had earlier pioneered on the 911 Turbo's petrol engine.
• The switch to flat-four turbo power brought more torque and horsepower than the outgoing naturally aspirated flat-six while lowering fuel consumption.
