Two compact, high-revving permanent-magnet motors deliver instant, seamless all-wheel-drive thrust with eerie quiet, the Air Grand Touring snapping to highway speed without drama or shift interruption.

The motors and inverters are designed and built in-house at Lucid's Casa Grande, Arizona plant, the legacy of a company that began in 2007 as battery-and-powertrain specialist Atieva before pivoting to whole cars under ex-Tesla Model S chief engineer Peter Rawlinson.

• Lucid's miniaturized drive unit is so power-dense the company supplied battery packs for the entire Formula E grid for several seasons before building its own cars.
• The Air's roughly 900-volt architecture lets it add hundreds of miles of range in well under 20 minutes, far above the 400-volt norm of most rivals.
• Lucid's race-derived powertrain efficiency helped the Air post some of the longest EPA range figures ever certified for a production EV, exceeding 500 miles.
