The twin-turbo V6 trades a V8's character for a thick wave of low-end torque, deliberately tuned in the GX 550 for muscular off-road pulling power rather than peak horsepower.

This is Toyota's V35A-FTS, the 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 introduced to replace the long-serving 5.7-liter V8, and it's shared across the Land Cruiser 300, Tundra, Sequoia and Lexus LX 600.

• Lexus deliberately fits the GX 550 with smaller turbochargers than other applications, giving it less peak power but more torque, better suited to low-speed off-roading.
• The engine made more torque than the V8 it replaced, the whole point of Toyota's switch away from the 5.7-liter.
• It was the centerpiece of Toyota's move to retire its big naturally aspirated V8s across its flagship trucks and SUVs.
