The verdict

What's good

  • Ladder-frame construction handles trail abuse that soft-roaders cannot
  • Lightest body in class means obstacles that beach others are moot
  • Mechanical simplicity translates to very low long-term repair costs
  • Cult following creates strong resale even as it ages

What's not

  • Freeway stability is genuinely unsettling above 65 mph
  • Cabin is barely wide enough for two adults shoulder-to-shoulder
  • Payload and towing are laughably small for a truck-shaped vehicle
  • Safety rating is the lowest in the Suzuki lineup tested

The engine

K15B

1.5L I4

A naturally aspirated, rev-happy four that trades turbo punch for honesty and durability, peaking around 105 PS high in the range. In the featherweight Jimny it feels willing rather than fast, which suits the car's go-anywhere brief.

Part of Suzuki's K-engine family, the K15B debuted in 2018 in the Maruti Ertiga and Ciaz before powering the fourth-generation Jimny. It is an all-aluminium, open-deck DOHC design developed largely for Suzuki's India-built global models.
