The verdict

What's good

  • Toyota's i-FORCE MAX hybrid delivers low-end torque that smooths trail crawling
  • Fox Internal Bypass shocks soak up whoops without setup or tuning
  • Crawl Control and Multi-Terrain Select reduce driver fatigue on technical terrain
  • Resale value holds better than almost any rival SUV in its class

What's not

  • Body-on-frame structure creates noticeable roll on highway sweepers
  • Rear seat cushion is thin and tiring on long road trips
  • Infotainment response feels sluggish compared to Ford Bronco Raptor
  • Dealer markup culture means actual transaction price often exceeds MSRP significantly

The engine

i-FORCE MAX

2.4L Turbo I4 Hybrid

A turbocharged four with an electric motor sandwiched in the bell housing, it serves up a thumping 465 lb-ft of torque with instant electric shove — muscular and modern, no V6 needed.

Built on Toyota's new T24A-FTS turbo-four, the i-FORCE MAX hybrid system launched with the fourth-generation Tacoma in 2023 and arrived in the redesigned 2025 4Runner, replacing the old naturally aspirated 3.5L V6.
