A horizontally opposed 'boxer' four whose pistons punch outward against each other, giving the low, level thrum Subaru fans know and an inherently smooth, low-vibration delivery.

Part of Subaru's third-generation FB boxer family announced in 2010, succeeding the long-running EJ series; Subaru has built horizontally opposed engines for its cars since the 1960s, making the layout a brand signature.

The flat layout sits the engine's mass low in the chassis, lowering the center of gravity and aiding the stability Subaru pairs with its symmetrical all-wheel drive.
Subaru unofficially says 'FB' stands for 'FHI / Future and Brand New / Boxer.'
Versus the older EJ engines, the FB25 was redesigned with a longer stroke and narrower bore to broaden torque and improve fuel economy and emissions.
The 2020-on Outback adopted the direct-injection FB25D variant as its base engine.
