BMW's B48, in production since 2014, replaced the older N20 and debuted in the Mini Hatch before spreading across BMW's range. It's part of a modular family sharing a common 500 cc-per-cylinder architecture with BMW's three- and six-cylinder engines.

• It shares 500 cc per cylinder with the celebrated B58 inline-six, so the two engines use many common parts and design principles.
• It pairs a twin-scroll turbocharger with high-precision direct injection, a combination aimed at cutting lag while keeping the engine docile at low load.
• The same modular block logic lets BMW build three-, four- and six-cylinder engines down one production line.
