In rear-drive Taycan and Macan Electric form, a single permanently-excited synchronous motor delivers instant, surgically precise thrust with the silent, repeatable launches that became a Porsche EV signature.

Porsche developed its EV motors in-house around an 800-volt architecture first proven in the Le Mans-winning 919 Hybrid race car, and the Taycan was the first production car to adopt that system.

• The motors use 'hairpin winding,' with rectangular wires packed tighter than round ones to cram more copper into the stator for greater output in the same space.
• Porsche chose the permanently-excited synchronous design over the cheaper induction type partly because it overheats less, allowing more sustained, repeatable performance.
• The 800-volt system can charge a Taycan from 5 to 80 percent in roughly 22 minutes on a suitable fast charger.
