The verdict

What's good

  • Third-row headroom genuinely rivals a full-size van
  • Air suspension smooths highway miles with uncanny quietness
  • Massaging front seats standard on mid trims and above
  • Interior sound deadening beats most German luxury SUVs

What's not

  • Reliability record trails German and Japanese luxury rivals
  • Infotainment system can feel laggy versus current competition
  • Rear visibility is poor due to thick pillars and high beltline
  • Cost of ownership escalates quickly at dealer service intervals

The engine

EcoBoost

Twin-Turbo V6

A muscular twin-turbo six that serves up V8-rivaling thrust with a deep wave of low-rpm torque, giving the big Navigator effortless, quiet pulling power.

Ford's flagship 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 grew out of the 2007 Lincoln MKR concept's 'TwinForce' engine and entered production at the Cleveland Engine Plant in 2009; the Navigator shares its high-output tune with the Ford F-150 Raptor.
