A smooth, free-revving turbo four with a strong mid-range and BMW's characteristic willingness to keep pulling, refined enough to feel like more than just an entry engine.

BMW's B48, in production since 2014, replaced the older N20 and debuted in the Mini Hatch before spreading across BMW's range. It's part of a modular family sharing a common 500 cc-per-cylinder architecture with BMW's three- and six-cylinder engines.

It shares 500 cc per cylinder with the celebrated B58 inline-six, so the two engines use many common parts and design principles.
It pairs a twin-scroll turbocharger with high-precision direct injection, a combination aimed at cutting lag while keeping the engine docile at low load.
The same modular block logic lets BMW build three-, four- and six-cylinder engines down one production line.
