Codenamed 'Apache,' this 392-cubic-inch HEMI is Chrysler's purpose-built heavy-duty gas engine, introduced in 2014 with a cast-iron block and forged internals, drawing on Chrysler's durability know-how stretching back to its WWII-era engineering.

• It runs two spark plugs per cylinder (16 total), with the second plug firing during the power stroke to burn fuel more completely.
• It uses sodium-filled exhaust valves, a heat-shedding trick borrowed from high-output aviation and racing engines, to survive sustained towing loads.
