The engine

Biturbo (M177/M176)

Twin-Turbo V8

A deep, hard-edged V8 bark with brutal mid-range shove, its 'hot-V' layout giving sharp throttle response and minimal lag for a turbocharged engine of its size.

Designed and hand-assembled by Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach, Germany, replacing the older M157 and M278 V8s and serving as the modern flagship of AMG's V8 lineage since 2015.

The two turbochargers sit inside the V between the cylinder banks, a 'hot inside V' layout that shortens gas paths and cuts turbo lag.
Each AMG-spec engine is built by a single technician under the 'one man, one engine' principle, with that builder's signature on a plaque atop the motor.
The same engine family was supplied to Aston Martin to power cars like the DB11 and Vantage.
