The verdict

What's good

  • Folding soft top for open-air cruising
  • Tiny back seats add real flexibility
  • Race-derived turbo tech under the hood
  • Easy on fuel for a roadster

What's not

  • Four-cylinder lacks the V8's drama
  • Trunk shrinks with the top down
  • Pricey scheduled servicing
  • Firm ride on rough surfaces

The engine

M139l

2.0L Turbo I4 Hybrid

AMG's longitudinal 2.0-liter hybrid four uses an electric exhaust-gas turbocharger and a rear electric motor for ferocious, lag-free response — Formula 1 technology shrunk into a road car.

The hand-built M139 is the most powerful series-production four ever; in '43' and '63' hybrid guise it borrows the electrified turbo straight from Mercedes' F1 power units.
