A hybrid that deliberately feels like a high-revving sports engine rather than a CVT-droning economy car, with stepped, gear-like power delivery and the gasoline V6 able to spin out a genuine, climbing soundtrack.

Lexus's Multi Stage Hybrid system debuted on the LC 500h, revealed at Geneva in 2016, pairing a 3.5-litre V6 (8GR-FXS) with two electric motors in the flagship LC grand tourer.

It bolts a physical four-speed automatic gearbox onto the back of the hybrid CVT, multiplying the available ratios to mimic a 10-speed and deliver real, stepped shifts.
The setup lets the car cruise on electric power alone at speeds up to around 87 mph before the petrol engine is needed.
