The engine

MultiAir

Turbo I4 Plug-In Hybrid AWD

A plug-in hybrid that splits duties cleverly — a 1.3-liter turbo four drives the front wheels while a separate electric motor powers the rear, the pair combining for roughly 280 hp and instant, torque-filled launches.

The Tonale, built since 2022, is the first Alfa Romeo offered with a plug-in hybrid system; the powertrain comes from parent Stellantis, pairing Fiat's small turbocharged MultiAir four with electrification.

The car's Q4 all-wheel drive isn't mechanical — the front axle is driven by the engine while a dedicated rear electric motor (about 90 kW) drives the back wheels, electronically linking the two.
Its 15.5 kWh lithium-ion battery provides roughly 30 miles (around 48 km) of all-electric range.
Using a 7.4 kW charger, the battery can be fully recharged in about 2.5 hours.
Fiat's MultiAir technology uses an electro-hydraulic system instead of a conventional intake camshaft to control the intake valves directly.
