The verdict

What's good

  • SH-AWD torque vectoring corners flatter than almost any three-row SUV
  • Third row is genuinely usable for adults on short trips
  • Sport Hybrid version available adds regenerative braking with no range anxiety
  • Perfect IIHS score across all crash categories for its class

What's not

  • Infotainment touchpad interface has a frustrating learning curve for new owners
  • Third-row entry requires folding the second row even with power seats
  • Fuel costs notably higher than rival hybrid three-row options
  • Rear cargo space shrinks noticeably with all three rows occupied

The engine

Type S Turbo V6

Twin-Scroll Turbo V6

A purpose-built performance V6 with an eager, free-revving top end and a deliberately tuned exhaust note, engineered to feel sharper than the older naturally aspirated 3.5.

Designed largely at Honda R&D in Tochigi, Japan and assembled at the Anna Engine Plant in Ohio, it was created exclusively for Acura's revived Type S models, debuting in the 2021 TLX Type S.
