What's good

All the pace of the saloon with a load bay that makes it usable as an only car
Individual motors at the rear steer the car with torque rather than fighting it with brakes
Rear headroom is genuinely better than the saloon's, which matters more than the boot for most families

The engine

Tri-Motor Electric (AWD)

Three axial-flux motors, one at the front and one for each rear wheel, in the body style that has always suited fast Mercedes best. The rear pair can send different torque to each side of the car mid-corner, so an estate this heavy turns with an agility the shape does not advertise.

The Shooting Brake is the second body for AMG's first electric 45, and Mercedes priced it separately rather than treating it as an option on the saloon. It shares the 800-volt compact architecture introduced with the standard CLA, with AMG's own motors, thermal management and software on top.

The extra body costs it about thirty kilometres of official range against the saloon.
The front motor can decouple on a steady cruise, so even the estate spends quiet motorway miles as a rear-driver.
Axial-flux motors are far shorter than conventional ones, which is what makes a three-motor layout packageable at this size.
The Shooting Brake name has been Mercedes' term for a compact estate since the first CLA wore it in 2015.
