Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric

An electric car that makes its own electricity on board, fusing hydrogen with oxygen to drive a rear-mounted motor with silent, smooth power and only water from the tailpipe. It drives like a quiet rear-wheel-drive EV but refuels in minutes like a gasoline car.

'Mirai' means 'future' in Japanese; Toyota began fuel-cell development in 1992 and launched the first Mirai in 2014, with the second generation moving to the rear-drive TNGA platform.

• The 2026 Mirai carries an EPA-estimated driving rating of up to 402 miles, refilling its hydrogen tanks in roughly five minutes.
• The second-generation car stores about 5.6 kg of hydrogen across three high-pressure tanks, up from two tanks in the original.
• Toyota designs and builds its own solid-polymer-electrolyte fuel-cell stacks, technology rooted in its decades of hybrid expertise.
