A naturally aspirated four with crisp, linear throttle response and eager top-end pull, prioritizing immediacy and real-world economy over forced-induction punch.

Part of Mazda's Skyactiv-G family introduced in the 2013 Mazda6, reflecting Mazda's contrarian decision to perfect high-compression naturally aspirated engines while rivals downsized to small turbos.

It runs an unusually high compression ratio for a mainstream engine, reaching up to 14:1 in some markets to extract efficiency without forced induction.
A 4-2-1 exhaust manifold helps suppress engine knock at that high compression, a key enabler of the design.
Since 2018 the engine has used cylinder deactivation, shutting down two cylinders under light load to save fuel.
