Twin-Turbo V8

In the 760i this twin-turbo V8 is all silken muscle: a deep, refined swell of torque that wafts a long-wheelbase limousine to 60 mph in around four seconds with almost no drama, the turbos tucked away for instant, lag-free response.

It is BMW's N63 family, the engine that pioneered the now-ubiquitous hot-vee turbo V8 layout, evolved over multiple technical updates since debuting in the 2008 X6 xDrive50i and now carrying 48V mild-hybrid assistance.

• The N63 was the world's first production engine to place its turbochargers inside the V of the cylinder banks, a hot-vee layout now copied across the industry.
• It replaced the naturally aspirated N62 V8, marking BMW's shift to forced induction for its luxury eight-cylinders.
• Nestling the hot turbos and exhaust between the banks keeps the gas path short for faster spool, but the heat trapped there made early versions notoriously demanding to service.
