A torque-forward turbo four that delivers its muscle low and early, giving the Tacoma a flatter, more diesel-like shove than the old naturally aspirated V6 it replaced.

The T24A-FTS first appeared in 2021 in the Lexus NX before being reworked for truck duty; it's the four-cylinder flagship of Toyota's Dynamic Force family, marketed under the i-FORCE banner.

• It uses a twin-scroll turbocharger to sharpen throttle response and cut the lag that plagued earlier boosted Toyota fours.
• Toyota deployed it specifically to retire both the 2GR naturally aspirated V6 and the older 8AR-FTS 2.0-liter turbo in one stroke.
• Despite being marketed for trucks, its core architecture is shared with the engines in the Highlander and Grand Highlander, reinforced for heavier duty cycles.
