Twin-Turbo V8 (Mild Hybrid)

A deep, refined twin-turbo V8 that delivers effortless, surging torque befitting a flagship; in non-AMG S 580 and GLE 580 guise it favors silken luxury thrust over the AMG version's raw aggression.

Part of the 4.0L hot-vee V8 family revealed with the 2014 Mercedes-AMG GT to replace the old 5.5L; the S 580 and GLE 580 use the M176 variant, assembled at Mercedes' Untertürkheim plant rather than by AMG in Affalterbach.

• The turbochargers sit inside the 'hot-V' between the cylinder heads, one of the first mass-produced engines to do so, shortening exhaust runners for faster spool.
• The 580 models pair the M176 with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system for an electric boost and smoother stop-start.
• Its AMG sibling, the hand-built M177, is assembled under the 'one man, one engine' principle and also powered the Aston Martin DB11.
