The verdict

What's good

  • Air suspension delivers limo-smooth ride even over sharp urban bumps
  • Third row is genuinely adult-usable, not a compromise
  • E-Active Body Control keeps the massive SUV flat through corners
  • Interior craftsmanship matches or beats every direct rival

What's not

  • Reliability scores consistently trail BMW and Lexus competition
  • Infotainment menu depth can overwhelm first-time Mercedes owners
  • Service costs at independent shops are substantially higher than mainstream brands
  • Short real-world range between fill-ups limits road-trip convenience

The engine

AMG Hot-V V8

Twin-Turbo V8 Mild Hybrid

A hand-built 4.0-liter biturbo V8 with a deep, layered roar, here softened slightly for the GLS but still delivering muscular, refined shove backed by a 48-volt boost.

The M177 was designed by Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach to replace the M157, and pairs an EQ Boost 48-volt mild-hybrid system with the GLS 580's V8.
