Four individual motors — one per wheel — give the electric G-Wagen brutal, precisely metered torque and the party trick of spinning in place, all while keeping the boxy icon's go-anywhere composure.

Developed by Mercedes-Benz from the Concept EQG shown at IAA 2021, the production G 580 with EQ Technology keeps the G-Class ladder frame, integrating the four motors into the frame rather than abandoning the legendary off-road architecture.

• The four independent motors enable 'G-Turn,' letting the SUV rotate up to two full circles on its own axis on loose surfaces.
• A selectable Low Range mode delivers a 2:1 gear reduction usable at speeds up to around 53 mph, preserving real low-speed crawling ability.
• The motors are 'permanently excited synchronous' units mounted to the frame near each wheel, not hub motors, protecting them off-road.
