• At low and mid speeds the gas engine usually just spins a generator to feed the electric drive motor, so the wheels are turned by electricity even though there's no plug.
• Only at steady highway cruising does the engine clutch in to drive the wheels directly, where it is most efficient.
• The Atkinson-cycle engine sacrifices some outright power for thermal efficiency, leaning on the electric motor to fill in the low-end.
