Honda's two-motor hybrid feels electric most of the time, gliding silently at low speed and surging with instant motor torque, while the engine often acts as a generator rather than a direct driver.

The Sport Hybrid i-MMD (later e:HEV) launched in June 2013 in the Accord Hybrid, built around an Earth Dreams 2.0-liter DOHC Atkinson-cycle four paired with drive and generator motors.

• Most of the time the gasoline engine spins a generator to feed the electric drive motor; only at steady cruising speed does a clutch send engine power mechanically to the wheels.
• Honda claimed the 2.0-liter Atkinson unit was, at launch, one of the most energy-efficient mass-produced gasoline engines in the world.
• The system has no conventional multi-speed transmission, using its two motors and a single lock-up clutch to manage power instead.
