A turbocharged direct-injection four with strong, flat torque low in the rev range and the eager, boosted punch that defines the modern Volkswagen Group hot-four.

Volkswagen Group's EA888, first shown in 2006, was developed by Audi engineers to replace the EA113 turbo series while keeping the long-standing 88 mm cylinder spacing; it powers the Arteon in its Gen 3 and later forms.

• The '888' nods to its 88 mm cylinder spacing, a dimension carried forward from earlier EA827/113 designs.
• Across its generations the same basic engine spans an enormous range of VW Group cars, from the Golf GTI and Golf R to the Atlas SUV.
• In Arteon R guise the 2.0 TSI produces around 316 bhp, showing how far the four has been pushed.
• The Arteon itself replaced the CC as VW's flagship 'four-door coupe,' positioned a notch more upmarket.
