A naturally aspirated four tuned for smooth, economical everyday driving rather than outright urgency, pairing direct injection with a CVT for relaxed commuting.

The MR20DD is part of Nissan's MR engine family, originally co-developed with Renault during the alliance; this direct-injection version powers the current Sentra and is built for efficiency-focused mainstream duty.

It uses Twin CVTC variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts.
The engine is undersquare, with a stroke longer than its bore, favoring low-end response and efficiency over high-rpm power.
The MR family was originally engineered jointly by Nissan and Renault and has been used by both brands.
