The M20A-FXS belongs to Toyota's Dynamic Force engine family, developed under the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) strategy; the UX 250h shares its core engine with the contemporary Corolla.

It achieves roughly 41% thermal efficiency, among the highest of any production gasoline engine, aided by a high 14:1 compression ratio.
TNGA radically simplified Toyota's lineup, replacing some 800 engine variants with a much smaller family of nine Dynamic Force designs; the UX 250h's engine won a Wards 10 Best Engines award in 2019.
